The Alla Prima Painting Sessions

Since the last time I posted one of these sessions, we've actually had several that I haven't updated this blog with.
The next session we did was with Yuri, she is a South African fashion model based here in NZ and a tattooist/dog groomer. She has a really interesting look which made her a great subject for a painting. I was still getting used to the process of painting a person from life in only 2 hours. But the great thing I really ended up getting out of this was a great photo reference for which I later did a painting from which I was really happy with.
The next was from life drawing model Alicea. Each session has been a learning experience. I once again brought all my paints etc but not a surface to paint on so had to use one of the mdf boards which wasn't ideal. I feel I got through the painting quicker which was one thing I was trying to work on, but maybe got a little off on the likeness at the end. This session also made me think about experimenting with the set up and change the stage a bit.
Which leads us to the next one where we had the model by the window on a nice summer day. Really enjoyed this session. I felt my painting was a little bit too small though which made it harder to paint detail. But it turned out fine and was a fun time painting alongside others.
This would be the last of the sessions at Studio One due to booking schedules. We would later find a new venue at Gifford Gallery in Mt Eden Village, where we did another two sessions. I will post those in a later post.
